Cover Reveal: Bitten by Trouble

BITTEN BY TROUBLE BY LIZZY GAYLE

AVAILABLE AUGUST 24, 2023

“Cause of death?” Julian asked, tilting his head as though looking at the carnage from a different angle might provide insights.

“The same as everyone who saw her thought,” I snapped. “Her throat was ripped out.”

Julian frowned. “By what, Charlotte?”

I swallowed back the bile that threatened again as I glanced at the torn skin. “Teeth. Sharp teeth.”

Dr. Charlotte Devaux’s just been through hell but taking a break from the mayhem isn’t an option.

When she’s tossed into a murder investigation more confusing than her budding relationship with her boss, the sexy, stubborn vampire, Lieutenant Julian Carver, her psychic powers provide more questions than answers. There’s a frustrating lack of evidence to explore in her lab. And since the murder was committed on the Supernatural Handling Agency’s Division of Equity’s (SHADE’s) base, Julian’s convinced there’s a mole in the organization.

As the investigation intensifies, unexpected blackmail from one of the suspects threatens the safety of Charlotte’s family. But trusting anyone else with the information could be a grave mistake—even Julian. The vamp might be amazing in bed, but that doesn’t mean she should share everything with him, considering the secrets she knows he’s keeping from her. And the fact he may very well make things worse by tearing out the blackmailer’s throat. Complicating matters are her new friends, but are they reliable or do they have agendas of their own?

If she doesn’t figure out who to trust, it could cost the lives of everyone she loves and let a murderer go free.

Cradled in his strong arms, Peyton’s eyes snapped open. Her welcoming pools of blue had been stained to inky black voids of nothingness. Fat cerulean veins wriggled beneath the surface of her skin, like roused and ravenous serpents. Malachi pulled back, Peyton’s body floating upright as if hooked by the ribs and dragged. Bones audibly snapped, and her head contorted at a freakish angle to gape in Ireland’s direction. To the cantankerous Horseman, that was the equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet. Feeling her senses sharpen, Ireland braced herself with one hand on the back of a booth.

Catapulting over Malachi’s head, she landed beside him in a low crouch and forcibly shoved him aside. The lights continued to flash, each illumination revealing another grisly contortion of Peyton’s body: knees bending backward, arms twisting in countless joints, her spine seemingly liquid as she rolled head over feet in Ireland’s direction. The motion appeared more arachnid than human. The window to their right shattered in a spray of shards, Ireland’s sword sailing in to settle into her waiting palm. While everyone else shielded themselves from the shrapnel, she struck a defensive pose with her sword by her ear in an overhand grasp. “Don’t make me stab a nun,” she growled. “I mean, I’ll do it, but I won’t feel good about it.” Again, the nun’s body rotated in an inexplicably spineless back walkover that ended with her feet being planted directly in front of Ireland. Chest rising and falling with the yearning for bedlam, Ireland hissed out a simple warning, “Don’t do this.”

Peyton’s body retracted board straight, the ends of her hair brushing the floor before she flung forward as if on a spring. Her fingers darted out to encircle the wrist of Ireland’s sword wielding hand. Blood trickled from her nose, staining her lips with ruby droplets. Leaning in, cheek to cheek, her breath singed Ireland’s nostrils with the foul, rotten-egg stench of sulfur. Take … her … to … hell,” Peyton rasped against Ireland’s ear. The lights beamed back on. The ghouls gone. Letting her sword fall to the ground with an ear-piercing twang, Ireland caught the full weight of Peyton’s body as she fell limp against her.

“I’m pretty sure we’re already there,” she rumbled and eased the girl to the ground.

Release Day Blitz: The King's Mortal

The King's Mortal by Armada West
Published March 6, 2015

Blurb:
Lana was already in over her head when she meets Gavin, an arms dealer. After that she loses all control as she’s swept into a world of drug lords, vampire kings, and the disease-spreading doppelgängers of mankind. She will have to choose a side in a holy war she cannot win.

Synopsis:
I invite you to join me in Cimmerian, the frigid vampire realm—the home to the huntsmen of God. They have been tasked with slaughtering the humans who've released the plagued doppelgängers of mankind from their hellish prison, and it is an eternally uphill battle. Hope comes in the form of young Lana Corvin, a psychic lingering on the cusp of death with a blood disease, and wasting her precious days as the main squeeze of a notorious drug dealer.

When she becomes the target of Cerberus, a kingpin drug lord, Fate will teach her that life—no matter how much or how little of it you possess—gives no second chances. That is, unless the rogue Vlad Dracula, hellbent on usurping the throne to claim Cimmerian for himself, doesn't teach it to her first.

Excerpt:

“You should leave now.” The words caught her off-guard and she glanced at him with eyebrows raised. “Let me rephrase that. You need to leave here now, before you get hurt.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“I believe, my dear, he’s talking about me.”
Lana turned to look over her shoulder, but Gavin grabbed her by the arm and pulled her behind him as Cerberus moved forward on stealthy feet. His steps hardly made a sound as he crossed the gravel of the railway yard toward them with his hired muscle trailing behind him. Béla, Donatien, and Mónica immediately stood straight and tensed, their eyes focused on him. It took Russ, Johnson, and Blair a little longer to realize their party wasn’t so exclusive anymore. They turned, and when their eyes fell upon Cerberus and the men flanking him, there was no mistaking the flicker of fear in their eyes. The way they took a cautious step away was all the confirmation Lana needed to know Mikey was gone.

“This is a private meeting,” Gavin said. His arms hung at his sides casually, but everything about his stance was ready to move as he stared at Cerberus and his henchmen. There were ten of them, not including the dogs bristling at the ends of their chain leashes. Dear God, what kind of dogs are those? They were massive, standing only a few inches shy of her mediocre five feet, and covered with bushy fur. Maybe they were bears, not dogs at all.

Lana glanced warily from Cerberus to Mónica, Donatien, and Béla. Mónica had locked up the artillery, and Lana noticed the appearance of a holster holding a gun at her hip. Donatien and Béla were now on each side of her and Gavin, and she got the uneasy sensation they were for her, not Gavin. Meanwhile Blair, Russ, and Johnson were all starting to reach for the heat they were packing.

“I was giving you the benefit of the doubt my invitation was just misplaced.” Cerberus’ beady eyes moved over to Lana’s friends. “It looks like I was mistaken.”

“You were.”

Gavin’s tone never wavered as Cerberus strutted forward. Lana shied away behind Gavin, biting down on her lip—Cerberus didn’t miss the motion. Immediately his eyes flashed to her. He was a lone wolf who scented blood.

“I know you. You’re Vic’s piece of ass.” His eyes had a cruel glimmer. “If you’re here, he won’t be. That’s rather disappointing.”

It was a slap to her already wavering confidence and Lana physically winced at the comment. All it took was that momentary distraction. She didn’t see him pull the gun out; she only heard the safety clicking off.

“Now, this is going to be nice and easy from here on out. You three” —he waved the muzzle in Blair’s direction— “will load all of that into my car. I will pay you for the merchandise.” Cerberus was mindful enough not to point the gun at Gavin. “And you . . .” He eyed her with hunger. “You can get in my car, dear.”

“I’d rather shit in my hands and clap,” she said.

Guest Post: The Secrets About the Horror Genre

The Secrets about the Horror Genre

About The Unholy

"A young curandera, a medicine woman, intent on uncovering the secrets of her past is forced into a life-and-death battle against an evil Archbishop. Set in the mystic land of Aztlan, the Unholy is a novel of destiny as healer and slayer. native lore of dreams and visions, shape changing, and natural magic work to spin a neo-gothic web in which sadness and mystery lure the unsuspecting into a twilight realm of discovery and decision."

Guest Post

The greatest secret about the horror genre is that it is so multifarious and multiparadigmatic that it defies description. You get S. King with increasingly rich stories as he is ageing, a man who not only has lived and knows horror, but knows longing and love as is evident in his more mature stories written over the past few years especially Lisey’s Story. Then at the other end of the spectrum you get the rough and wild bad boy of horror, Edward Lee. The guy has some seriously demented characters that never ever can be redeemed. I mean what kind of character is the main character in Portrait of a Psychopath as a Young Woman

Horror is such a varied genre. In The Unholy you get more of a classic good guy and bad guy scenario but played out on a supernatural venue featuring the mythopoeic realm of Aztlan. This is a cultural realm with deep spiritual meaning for the mestizos of New Mexico. This is a story of church politics, culture, misogyny, and the struggle to find a sense of self within this multifarious and tormented drama. I don’t think anything short of a horror story (I won’t clean it up at this point by calling it a psychological thriller) could convey the terror of conflicting energies of culture, church, abandonment and the desperate need for courage in a world that seems like it has gone to hell in a church pew!

I love horror and I love horror because it is so multifaceted, rich, and into extremes that pop out the realities behind the scenes of everyday life. That’s the secret of horror…it’s into extremes so as to express truth…if you got something to say, an old professor of mine used to quip, why not exaggerate to get the point across. Horror does that. The Unholy does horror and goes to extremes to pop out the reality behind what is observable.
